Clicker

A clicker is a simple but powerful tool used in positive reinforcement training to clearly mark desired behaviors at the exact moment they happen. It helps your puppy quickly connect their actions with rewards, speeding up the learning process. I recommend clicker training for building focus, shaping new skills, and reinforcing good choices in a fun and consistent way.

Treat pouch for training your Australian Shepherd puppies

Treat Pouch for Training

We highly recommend utilizing a dedicated treat pouch to store training treats during sessions. This not only ensures easy and quick access to rewards but also preserves the pockets of your clothes.

Remote Treat Dispenser

A remote treat dispenser is a great tool for reinforcing good behavior from a distance. It’s especially useful for crate training, building calm alone time, or rewarding quiet behavior without entering the room. I’ve used it to help puppies adjust to short separations, reinforce place work, and even support manners around the front door. It lets you reward your Australian Shepherd or Mini American Shepherd puppy with perfect timing, even when you’re across the room.

Potty bells for training your Australian shepherd puppies

Potty Bells

Potty bells offer an effective way for your Australian Shepherd puppy or Mini Australian Shepherd puppy to communicate their need to go outside for potty. Check out our informative blog post on how to successfully train your puppy to use potty bells. Additionally, there are numerous helpful training videos available on Google and YouTube to guide you through the process.

Mendota 3/8” 6’ Slip Leash

The Mendota 3/8" x 6' slip leash is my go-to. The material is soft, comfortable to hold, and easy to manage. This size works especially well for puppies and smaller Mini American Shepherd adults, providing a great balance of comfort and function.

Mendota 1/2” 6’ Slip Leash

For larger Mini American Shepherd puppies or full-sized Australian Shepherds, I recommend the Mendota 1/2" x 6' slip leash. It offers the same comfortable grip and reliable quality as the smaller version but with added strength and durability for bigger dogs. The thicker rope provides a secure feel in your hands without being bulky, making it a great choice for training and everyday walks with more powerful dogs.

Waterproof Long Lead

A long lead is one of my favorite tools for recall training, boundary work, and safe outdoor exploration. It allows your puppy or dog the freedom to move while still keeping them under control. I recommend starting with a 15–30 foot lead made from lightweight, durable material that won’t tangle easily.

Elevated Bed/Training Platform

An elevated bed or training platform is a great tool for teaching “place” and encouraging calm, focused behavior. It provides a clear physical boundary that helps your puppy understand where they should be during training, rest time, or when guests arrive. I use these regularly with our Australian Shepherds and Mini American Shepherds or Mini Aussies. They’re durable, easy to clean, and incredibly effective for building impulse control and household manners.

Snuffle Mat

A snuffle mat is an easy way to provide mental stimulation and enrichment, especially for busy-minded breeds like Australian Shepherds and Mini American Shepherds. Just scatter some kibble or treats among the fabric layers and let your puppy “hunt” with their nose. It’s a great tool for slowing down fast eaters, encouraging calm behavior, and giving your puppy a fun job to do indoors.

Exercise Pen

An exercise pen is one of the most useful tools for managing a young puppy. It creates a safe, contained space for play and rest when you can’t provide full supervision. I use x-pens daily to support crate training, establish routines, and prevent accidents or mischief. They’re easy to set up, adjustable, and especially helpful during those busy first few weeks with your Mini American Shepherd puppy (also known as Mini Aussie) or Australian Shepherd puppy.

KONG Toy

KONG toys are a must-have for both mental stimulation and calming routines. These durable, stuffable toys can be filled with kibble, soft food, or treats to keep your puppy engaged and focused. Freezing them makes the challenge last even longer. I use KONGs to support crate training, reduce boredom, and encourage calm behavior, especially during transitions like settling in or learning to be alone.
Medium KONGs are ideal for most Mini American Shepherds and puppies, while Large is a better fit for larger puppies and adult Australian Shepherds.
